Sony pulls Xperia Tablet S
Sony has reportedly pulled back its new Xperia Tablet S from sales. The tablet has water-proofing as one of its feature, but has gaps between the screen and the case which will make it susceptible to water damage. The defect is due to the manufacturing flaw. Sony spokeswoman Noriko Shoji, told that the company has not yet decided when it will resume sales.
According to the official numbers, the company has shipped around 100,000 of the devices. For already sold devices, the company will offer free maintenance and check-ups. The company also expects that the cost of the recall will have no significant impact on earnings.
We had a chance to check out Sony’s latest smartphones and tablets this morning, and among those devices was the Xperia Tablet S. While loaded with specs, it didn’t really blow us away that much. It has a nice textured backside but, overall, felt very similar to every other tablet on the market these days.
It’s equipped with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage, a 1-megapixel front facing camera for video chat, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 9.4-inch IPS OptiContract display with a sharp 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. We’re not sure why Sony is so behind on getting Android 4.1 on its devices, however. The Tablet S runs Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a bit of a bummer considering Jelly Bean is already available for manufacturers.
All of that aside, we did enjoy the tablet’s compact size and the speed at which we were able to navigate around the menus. The tablet is due out in September and, since there are 3G models available, we expect carriers partners to be announced in the coming weeks as well.
